People will be warned when they are being recorded

The images, which are sent to a hard drive on the officers' belts, will be used as evidence in court by officers in Reading, Berkshire.

Their introduction follows a two-week pilot and research to make sure the use of the footage met current laws and could be put forward in court.

Police said people would be warned if their behaviour was being recorded.

Insp Andy Bagnall said: "The pilots were positive and the cameras enable us to capture useful evidence against those whose behaviour is unacceptable, especially prolific offenders.

"Not only that but members of the public modified their behaviour when it was pointed out their actions were being recorded."

Tony Page, Reading Borough Council's lead councillor for community action, said: "Let the louts and yobs beware as the headcams will provide indisputable evidence and ensure a much greater chance of convictions."
