Mary-Ann witness describes ordeal
Mary-Ann Leneghan

A friend of murdered teenager Mary-Ann Leneghan has described in court how the pair were tortured and raped by a gang.

Mary-Ann, 16, was kidnapped and stabbed to death in Reading, Berkshire, in May 2005. Her friend survived after being shot in the head.

The 19-year-old told the jury they were kidnapped and taken to a hotel where they were repeatedly raped and beaten.

Five defendants deny charges of rape, kidnap and murder, but one man has pleaded guilty to kidnapping the pair.

Joshua Morally, 23, of Balham, London, changed his plea shortly before the trial began on Tuesday.

He still denies murder, attempted murder, rape and causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent.

The five other defendants are: Adrian Thomas, 20, of Battersea, south London; Llewellyn Adams, 24, of Balham, south London; Indrit Krasniqi, 18, of Chiswick, London; Michael Johnson, 19, of Southfields; and Jamaile Morally, 22, of Balham, south London.

All five men deny nine charges, including one charge of murder, one charge of attempted murder, two counts of kidnap, three counts of rape and two counts of causing GBH with intent.

Jamaile Morally also denies a further charge of raping Mary-Ann.

Stolen drugs

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told the jury at Reading Crown Court how they were taken to a hotel room and told to lie down on towels on the floor because of the blood dripping from the older girl's head.

"They were throwing questions at me but weren't giving me any opportunity to respond and just saying 'oh she's lying'.

"I was being hit constantly on my head," she said.

She told the court that while she was being raped in the room Mary-Ann was taken into the bathroom where she was also raped.

She also told the jury that she remembered Redz "accusing her of stealing the drugs".

Metal bar

The teenager had earlier told the court that Mary-Ann had known a man called Redz.

Mr Latham told the jury earlier this week that 20-year-old Adrian Thomas was known by the nickname Redz.

The teenager said she remembered seeing her handbag on the bed and it appeared to be ripped, with the stuffing falling out.

The witness said she had copies of her curriculum vitae in her bag because she was preparing for a job application.

She said she saw a man wearing a bandana take what she believed to be a pair of scissors and cut them up.

The court also heard that the men had used a metal bar to beat the girl during the ordeal in the hotel.

The trial continues.
