Capt John Nunneley said he was protesting against a gross injustice

Gillian Norbury's husband, Billy, was badly wounded in Burma in 1944 but was told he would not be paid a pension because he had enlisted in Kenya.

Mrs Norbury, 74, is now living off state benefits in Newbury, Berkshire.

On Tuesday, Capt John Nunneley, a former war comrade of Lt Norbury, held a protest outside Downing Street.

He believes it is a gross injustice that Mrs Norbury does not receive a war pension.

The Ministry of Defence said pensions are only awarded to units based in the UK and not to those raised overseas.

This means that Lt Norbury, who enlisted in the British Army in Kenya in 1940, was not eligible.

Lt Norbury, who was awarded a Military Cross for bravery, died in 1998 after decades of illness caused by the wounds he suffered in World War II.

Mrs Norbury admitted that she is still bitter about the way her husband was treated.

"I would hope to achieve the fairness that is due to my husband," she said.
