It is hoped the plans will help ease traffic congestion on race days |
Plans for a multi-million pound redevelopment of Newbury Racecourse have been announced. A new 7.5m access bridge will take traffic and pedestrians over the railway and into a new main entrance.
It is hoped this will help to ease the ever-present traffic problems in Newbury town centre on race days.
Another 5m will be spent creating an all-weather race track, which will run around the outside of the existing grass track.
There will also be a purpose built winner's enclosure, new shops, a 4-star hotel and new stables.
The redevelopment will be financed by developing land on the northern side of the racecourse into residential dwellings.
A public consultation is set to take place, although a date has not yet been set, and planning permission is due to be sought in the spring of 2006.
