Princess opens community hospital
Princess Ann
Princess Anne will officially open the new community hospital
A new hospital built with a 4m bequest has been opened by the Princess Royal as guest of honour.

Building the Newbury Community Hospital in Berkshire was the dying wish of Rosemary Rook, who left land worth 4m in her will towards its construction.

The hospital has already been treating patients for six months, but was only formally opened on Wednesday.

Princess Anne arrived by helicopter and was welcomed by the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, Phillip Wroughton.

Administering the legacy

The Princess toured the hospital and met patients, staff and volunteers.

The new hospital is funded partly by the 4m raised from the sale of land donated by the late Miss Rooke, who lived in Newbury.

Another 12 million was raised by the Newbury and Thatcham Hospital Building Trust, which was set up to administer the legacy.

Newbury's hospital services have previously been housed in dated buildings on two separate sites in the town.
