Hunger strike father still fasts

Hunger striker John Brown
A Fathers 4 Justice campaigner has vowed to continue his hunger strike until a row with the Child Support Agency over back payments is resolved.

John Brown, of Newbury, Berkshire, says he has survived on two glasses of wine and soya milk for eight weeks, in protest at a demand for 22,000.

Despite a meeting set up by his MP David Rendel on Friday, Mr Brown will continue with his fast.

The 56-year-old has not seen his 17-year-old daughter for four years.

'Huge errors'

The former advertising photographer who split with his partner in 1996, told BBC News Online: "Until the matter is resolved one way or another, I intend to carry on with my hunger strike.

"But because the CSA representatives conveyed a constructive attitude and serious intent to get the situation resolved, I will now not go on a water fast on Tuesday."

Mr Mike Ellis, the Thames Valley area Fathers 4 Justice organiser, accompanied Mr Brown to the meeting - organised by Newbury MP David Rendel at his constituency office.

Mr Brown is due to have another meeting over the money issue in October.

He claims the CSA has massively overestimated his income with its demand for seven years' of child support payments.

He said: "I ran my business from home, so when my family split-up I also lost my business.

"The CSA calculated my income on the basis of the money I made while I still had my business.

"I need the record set straight - they have made huge errors.

"They have so far destroyed any possibility of me getting back to work because of the trauma. "

A spokeswoman from the CSA said the organisation could not comment on individual cases.
