More than 300 homes will be set aside for key workers |
Hundreds of new houses are to be built in Berkshire thanks to a 28m grant, say council chiefs. The Housing Corporation funding will be used to develop 745 homes - 309 of which will be built for key workers.
More than 280 homes will also be made available under a shared ownership scheme, which helps first-time buyers to get a foot on the property ladder.
The announcement comes a week after the government unveiled subsidies for key workers looking for homes.
 | The shortage of affordable housing is a very serious issue for Reading |
The funding, which will be made available over the next two years, will help develop the major schemes planned for the town's Battle Hospital site, Kings Road and Chatham Place. About 2m will be spent redeveloping the former YMCA building on Parkside Road.
Two new bungalows with facilities for the disabled will also be built.
The council's housing boss councillor Mike Orton said: "The shortage of affordable housing is a very serious issue for Reading and this money will make a big contribution to tackling the problem.
"We have been working with our housing association partners to identify specific needs and sites and have been pressing very hard to support their affordable housing schemes to get Reading's bids accepted.
"I am very pleased that the government and the Housing Corporation have recognised the very great need in Reading and the value of the schemes that they are funding."
