New university name consultation
Luton University
The University of Luton is merging with Bedford campus
A new Bedfordshire University should be created from the merger of the University of Luton and De Montfort's Bedford campus, local people say.

The name of the new body, which is being created in 2006, was put out to public consultation.

The majority of people believed the university should either be called the University of Bedfordshire or Bedfordshire University.

The consultation involved focus groups and an e-mail survey across the region.

Strange suggestions

Thousands of staff, students and employers were also included in the consultation.

The suggested name will now be taken to the board of governors of the new university for approval.

The merger itself will be officially signed on 1 August.

Some of the stranger suggestions for names included the University of Mind over Matters and the University for Enlightenment.
