Police called after girls scuffle
Beverley Chambers and her daughter Jade
The family has lodged a complaint against the school
An inquiry is to be held after police were called following a playground scuffle involving two five-year-old girls - one with special needs.

Jade Chambers allegedly gripped another child around the neck at Heathwood Lower School, Leighton Buzzard, Beds.

Her mother Michelle said Jade had been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome on the same day and felt people were "ganging up" on them.

The county council said there would be an investigation into the incident.

Mrs Chambers said: "I was very angry and my husband's really angry.

"We just feel that we should have been approached, possibly by the parent rather than going to the police.

"I found that very hurtful and it came on the day that we received an official diagnosis on my daughter. So it was a double blow.

"We had police knocking on our door for a five-year-old. We were just shocked."

They have lodged a formal complaint with the school.

The Chambers' legal representative Ms Julie Maynard said: "In this case, with a five-year-old, because she cannot be held criminally responsible for her actions I think it (calling the police) was over the top.

"I'm also concerned that the other parent approached the police without first trying to mediate."

No further action

A Bedfordshire Police spokesman said they had received a complaint from a parent and they had a duty to investigate.

They gave advice to both parties involved and there would be no further action.

A Bedfordshire County Council spokesman said: "We are aware a complaint has been made by Mrs Chambers to the governing body of Heathwood Lower School, Leighton Buzzard, and that the governors will deal with this complaint in keeping with the school's complaints policy.

"Due to the school holidays it is unlikely the governors will be able to deal with the complaint until the start of the new term."

The school has 120 pupils aged from four to nine. The most recent Ofsted report in December 2002 said the school was very good and well-managed.
