The widower of Diane Pretty, who died of motor neurone disease, is to become a patron of a leading euthanasia group. Brian Pretty, from Luton, Beds, becomes a patron of Dignity in Dying as it changes its name from The Voluntary Euthanasia Society (VES) on Monday.
The society said it will continue to campaign for people's rights to choose how they want to die.
Diane Pretty, who took her fight for the right to die to the European Court of Human Rights, died in 2002.
Chief Executive Deborah Annetts said, "I am especially delighted that Brian Pretty will be a patron of Dignity in Dying.
"Diane did more than anybody to show people how politicians ignore the wishes of dying people. "
Dignity in Dying chose the new name after collecting suggestions from members before voting on their final choice.
Chief executive Deborah Annetts said: "Our vision is that everyone should have the right to die with dignity."
