Council backs 'brownfield' homes
Building site
Council objecting to housing plans wants more "brown sites" used
Plans to build 3,600 new homes are being blocked because a council believes more use should be made of available "brownfield" sites.

North Herts council said it was encouraged by a recent decision by the government to refuse a larger scheme to build 5,000 new homes near Stevenage.

Developers have been told they need to provide a more attractive plan.

Council leader F John Smith said there were a number of brownfield sites available in the district.

"We're looking at the correspondence with legal advisers and will continue to oppose any large scale development on the green belt.

"We want developers to use alternative brownfield sites for housing and we have several throughout the district," he said.
