Children 'were left home alone'
Two young children have been removed from their family home after police suspected they had been abandoned while their parents went on holiday.

Police said a girl, 7, and a boy, 11, were apparently "home alone" while their parents were on the tropical island of Curacao.

Neighbours in Shortstown, Bedfordshire, called in social services when they realised the children were alone.

A Beds Police spokesman said relatives were now caring for the youngsters.

The couple, aged 45 and 42, are thought to have been ordered to return to the UK from their week-long break in the Caribbean.

Inquiries continuing

However, the couple are experiencing travel problems because the father's passport has expired and needs renewing.

The police spokesman said: "We attended the property on October 27 following a request from social services in case there needed to be a forced entry.

"The children are well and staying with relatives.

"Police will be liaising with social services and other agencies and our inquiries are continuing."

Social services are leading the investigation into the situation, he added.

A spokesman for Bedfordshire County Council said: "The children are in good health and are being well cared for.

"The council has no immediate cause for concern over their welfare.

"Neither child was previously known to social services," he added.
