A beer made in Bedford and popular with lovers of Indian cuisine is now going to be brewed in India after a 1m deal was signed.

More than 9,000 curry houses in the UK, along with bars and supermarkets, currently offer Cobra beer.

A spokesman for Cobra brewery said the beer will be brewed in Rajasthan and marketed by India's largest independent brewery, the Mount Shivilak Group.

Cobra was founded by Karan Bilimoria and his friend Arjun Reddy in 1989.

Mr Bilimoria, founder and chief executive of Cobra said: "We want to continue to build Cobra as a global brand.

"From two years ago having had one brewery facility and one office, now we're brewing in three countries and have offices in four countries."

The recipe for the brew was originally devised by a brew master in Bangalore and now the company sells 55m worth of beer a year, half of which is drunk in restaurants.

The beer is also sold in supermarkets such as Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury's.
