Police target 'sham' marriages
Two marriages were stopped in an operation targeting suspected sham marriages on Thursday.

In all, police and immigration officers arrested seven men and three women at Dacorum Register Office, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

A police spokesman said intelligence suggested people were meeting at the register office in connection with alleged sham marriages.

Two marriage services were prevented by the operation, the spokesman said.

The 10 suspects were arrested for offences under the Immigration Act.

'Exploiting the system'

They were taken to Hemel Hempstead police station for questioning by immigration officers.

Supt Jon House said: "We gathered intelligence indicating that a number of foreign individuals were planning to take part in sham marriages at the Hemel Hempstead register office.

"These arrests highlight our commitment in tackling those individuals who are exploiting the system and committing organised crime across Hertfordshire.

"We are hoping that this sends out a clear message that if you are involved in this type of criminal activity you will be caught and arrested."
