Police horses will be patrolling on Saturday and Sunday
Police horses have been drafted in to a Bedfordshire town to help with high visibility patrols.

They are being stationed in Dunstable throughout Saturday and until 0300 GMT on Sunday.

The horses are being drafted in from Nottinghamshire Police to help local officers during the busy period between Christmas and the New Year.

They will be ridden by Nottinghamshire Police's mounted section, patrolling areas such as High Street North, High street south, West street and The Quadrant.

Operation Scorpion

The aim is to reassure the public and act as a deterrent to alcohol related violence and public disorder.

It is the latest phase in the Operation Scorpion initiative that has run over the last six weekends in Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Flitwick, Ampthill and Shefford.

Deputy divisional commander Superintendent Andy Martin said it has been the first time mounted horses have been used in Bedfordshire for anything other than controlling crowds after football matches.

Bedfordshire Police are planning to evaluate how effective the horse patrols have been before considering whether to use them in future.
