Glass bottle 'ban' to combat vandalism

Broken bottles are a problem for the community
A town council is asking off-licences to stop selling alcohol which comes in glass bottles to people aged under 25 years.

Members of Princes Risborough Town Council, in Buckinghamshire, believe it is the only way to combat vandalism in the town.

Vandalism costs Princes Risborough 20,000 a year.

Town councillors told the BBC they have seen their maintenance costs soaring in recent years.

A spokesman for the council said that most of the cost is spent on cleaning up broken glass bottles - with the council having to hire a contractor to pick up the broken glass on an almost daily basis.

Injury fears

Councillors believe it is only a matter of time before someone is injured by broken glass.

Gary Hall, the chair of the Town Council, said the bulk of the problem comes from the under 25s.

He wants all traders who sell alcohol to sign the voluntary code.

A meeting is being lined up for next month between the Town Council, police, off-licences and Wycombe District Council.
