Report highlights GP shortage

Investment in GPs reduces other strains on the health service
A serious shortage of doctors in Hertfordshire has been highlighted in a new report.

The findings, by a Beds and Herts local medical committee inquiry, has concluded that more investment is needed to reverse the trend of practices closing.

The report, named A Call for Courage, which was launched on Tuesday, follows a select committee-style review of primary care in Hertfordshire.

It took evidence from GPs and Primary care trusts in the county.

Serious workforce crisis

It concluded that there is now a patchy but serious GP workforce crisis with unacceptably high numbers of practice lists closed.

It says under-investment in primary care leads to a crisis in the health service as a whole.

The report also says that investment in GPs provides a greater and more cost efficient level of care to the patient.

It also reduces the strain on other parts of the health service such as hospitals.
