But elsewhere the severe weather created chaos on the roads as motorists struggled to get to work.
Gritters and snow ploughs were called on to clear the roads in Wigan, Greater Manchester.
For some people, such as two-year-old Josh Furlong, the snow was much more welcome.
In Birmingham, The Christie family, from New Zealand, took time out from visiting family to build a snowman in Redhouse Park.
Elsewhere in the city, the canals froze over as the heavy snow moved steadily southwards.
Many people refused to let the weather stop them going about their daily business.

Hundreds of children across the country took the opportunity to go sledging after the snow closed hundreds of schools.
Businesses predicted the weather would hit trade, although for this firm it was probably the wrong season anyway.
