Footage recorded from the helicopter is used as evidence in court |
A police helicopter helped to arrest more than 300 people throughout 2009, according to the latest figures. The North Midlands Helicopter Support Unit, which is owned by Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire police forces, also found almost 50 stolen vehicles. Officials said many of the 313 suspects arrested would have evaded police if the helicopter had not been used. It also aided policing of major operations such as the BNP's Red, White and Blue Festival in Denby, they added. 'Saves valuable time' Police were able to fly over the protest in August and monitor where officers should be deployed. John Jameson, the unit's executive officer, said: "Thanks to the crews, many suspects were apprehended who may have evaded capture if it the helicopter had not attended an incident. "Sometimes, when the conditions are not suitable for a land ambulance and the police helicopter is close to a scene, it can be used as an air ambulance, saving valuable time when transporting a casualty to hospital." Supt Gary Parkin, of Derbyshire Police, said: "The helicopter is a valuable resource. "It's equipped with a powerful search light and thermal imaging camera, both of which are key to finding suspects or missing people and footage recorded by the crew is often used as evidence in court."
