Weather hits flights at Luton and Stansted airports

Snow at Luton Airport
Flights are suspended at Luton Airport because of severe weather

Flights at Luton Airport have been suspended and services at Stansted delayed due to the severe weather.

Flights at Luton will remain suspended until at least 0430 GMT, the airport said. Passengers should contact airlines for further information.

The airport website is listing airline numbers for further information.

Flights were suspended at Stansted in Essex so snow could be cleared from runways. The airport has reopened but passengers should expect delays.

'Living hell'

One traveller said she had been stranded at Luton Airport since Monday afternoon.

"I have been trapped at Luton for 11 hours with no information," said Cheryl Jenkins.

"They won't give our bags back or let us back through customs. It's a living hell."

She added: "They got as far as boarding the plane earlier but (we) had to get off again.

"The flight was originally for last Friday but it was cancelled and they told us to come back on Monday.

"The flight was supposed to leave at 2pm.

"The bags are on the flight so no-one can leave."

Major roads around Luton are at gridlock as heavy snow has resulted in numerous collisions and vehicles queuing on roads near the airport.

The M1 near the town is at a standstill in heavy snow.
