A discount store recruiting 25 people in Northamptonshire for a new shop in a former Woolworths had more than 1,800 applicants show up at its open day. Norwich-based QD Stores is due to open in Wellingborough this month in a unit left vacant when Woolworths closed. The 1,800-strong turnout snapped up every application form and many were sent away to download one at home. Recruitment days are under way to interview hopefuls for jobs as sales assistants, supervisors and cashiers. A spokeswoman said crowds on the first day were queuing up three flights of stairs at the Hind Hotel in Wellingborough where the recruitment is under way. She said QD tries to interview everyone who completes an application form but if so many people turn up again it may not be possible. She added that a combination of reasons may have led to the huge influx of people including the recession and the closure of the town's branch of Woolworths.
