Job risk at struggling factory

Up to 160 jobs could be lost in County Durham as a glass factory may close due to the recession.

Schott Industrial Glass Ltd in Newton Aycliffe faces an uncertain future despite significant cost-cutting measures over the past 18 months.

A Schott spokesman said closure of the site was one of the options but a decision has not yet been made.

The factory, based in Aycliffe Industrial Park, has been generating large losses over the past few months.

A spokesman added: "In the current economic climate, we need to identify ways to maintain and increase the long-term profitability of the Schott Flat Glass Business Unit and, at the same time, continue to service our customers."

Global firm, Schott AG, is based in 41 countries worldwide, and specialises in household appliances, glass, pharmaceuticals, solar energy and electronics.

Last year it made more than 200m in profit.
