Thousands affected by power cut

Almost 4,500 homes in County Durham were without power for 24 hours after damage to overhead cables.

CE Electric users in Wingate, Hutton Henry, Blackhall, Castle Eden, Station Town and Hesledon were affected.

Extra engineers were drafted in to replace the damaged section and electricity was restored by Wednesday evening.

A company spokesman said anyone whose power had not come back on should check trip switches before phoning them.

Nursing homes in Blackhall and Wingate were given stand-by generators.

Residents reported problems at about 1730 GMT on Tuesday.
