Train services return to normal

Train at London Victoria
Train services between London and the South East were cancelled on Monday

Passengers can expect a normal train service in between the South East and London, rail operators have said.

On Wednesday morning Southern Railway and Southeastern said they were attempting to run a full timetable.

On Monday there were no services between Kent and Sussex because of heavy snowfall. There was a reduced service on Tuesday.

The train companies said there could be some delays or cancellations and urged passengers to check before travelling.

Network Rail said de-icing trains had been applying anti-freeze to the electrical rail tracks.

'Some cancellations'

A spokesperson for Southern Railway said: "Southern is running a normal timetable today. However, with a number of units out of place, some trains have been cancelled.

"Services may also be subject to short-notice alterations, delays and cancellations.

"We apologise for the disruption and any inconvenience caused. We are working hard to restore the full timetable."

In a statement Southeastern said: "Today we're planning to run the normal timetable service on all routes.

"You'll understand the ice and snow has caused problems over the last couple of days so it's likely there may be some delayed, diverted or cancelled services if the icy conditions continue.

"But we - and Network Rail - will be doing our best to endeavour to operate a full service for passengers."

More than 75 schools in Surrey remained closed on Wednesday, four schools and two pre-schools in Kent and one school in West Sussex also said they would not be opening.

Motorists have been warned to take extra care after temperatures fell as low as -6C (21F) overnight.

Airports operator BAA said it also expected to run a "full or near-full schedule" at Heathrow and Gatwick airports on Wednesday.
