Welder's blast death accidental

The death of a welder whose van exploded in a County Durham town was an accident, an inquest has ruled.

Andrew Herd, 33, died when acetylene gas ignited in Wolsingham, causing a blast which was described as being like a scene from a terrorist attack.

His family said the death in May 2007 could have been avoided if there had been ventilation in his vehicle.

The coroner expressed concern over the lack of guidance given to firms over the carrying of acetylene.

Andrew Tweddle said it was surprising given the damage the gas could cause.

He said he planned to write to the appropriate authorities demanding action.

Mr Tweddle ordered the inquest jury to return a verdict of accidental death.

Following the verdict, Mr Herd's family issued a statement saying his death could have been avoided if there had been "adequate ventilation" in his company van.

They said they were waiting to hear if there would be any further action by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Three weeks after the explosion, the HSE banned Mr Herd's employer, Ward Bros Plant Hire Ltd, of Darlington, from carrying the cylinders in closed vehicles.
