Plans for a large prison earmarked for the West Midlands have been revealed. The Ministry of Justice confirmed an extra 1,100 prison places could be created by the building on the site of the existing Featherstone Prison. Brinsford Young Offenders Institution is also on the site, which is near Wolverhampton, and the two buildings currently hold more than 1,000 inmates. A planning application is expected to be submitted to Wolverhampton City Council within weeks. The prison population in England and Wales reached a record high in February. Figures from the Ministry of Justice showed the number of inmates in jail and police cells stood at 81,681, which was 134 above the November 2007 figure.
