Toilet up for architecture prize

Parrock Street public toilet is shortlisted for the RIBA prize

A public toilet at a car park in Kent is among eight buildings in the South East shortlisted for a prestigious architecture award.

The toilet, in Parrock Street car park, Gravesend, was designed by London-based Plastik Architects.

It has been shortlisted by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) regional awards.

Other contenders include Chelsea Football Club's training HQ in Cobham, Surrey, which opened in July 2007.

The Lightbox museum and art gallery in Woking, Surrey, which opened last year, also made the list.

The awards, for buildings completed and occupied between 1 January 2006 and 21 February 2008, will be judged by a regional jury, with the winners announced on 29 May.

The winners will then go forward for the RIBA national awards to be presented in London in June.

Two other buildings in Kent - Folkestone Academy and the Viking Day Unit, Margate - are also shortlisted in the South East.

In Sussex, the De La Warr Pavilion restoration at Bexhill and the East Beach Cafe in Littlehampton are in the running.

And in Guernsey, the Royal Court development at St Peter Port is on the list.
