Another 1m for flood-hit areas

Another 1m is being provided by the government to help councils in areas affected by the summer floods, including Berkshire and Oxfordshire.

Floods recovery minister John Healy said the money was being made available to the "small number of councils" with a large number of displaced families.

Of the 48,000 affected households, 9,000 will not be spending Christmas in their own homes, Mr Healey said.

He added that it would be "many months" more before they could return home.

"The flood waters are long gone but problems for some families and communities continue," said Mr Healy.

"The government is in this for the long haul too. So it's right we continue to do everything possible."

"Some councils are bearing the costs of large scale checks and help will be needed for those who are vulnerable over the winter months."

He said the additional money meant the government had now provided 65m for flood-hit communities and promised that more support would follow.
