Expert to tackle NHS staff abuse
Paramedics
The appointment is a public sector first according to the NHS
An ambulance trust has appointed a security expert to help tackle violent attacks against its staff.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said security management specialist Bill Chilcott would work with police to investigate assaults and thefts.

The service said there had been 99 assaults against staff in Kent, Surrey and Sussex in the last year.

Mr Chilcott said: "Over the years too many people have gone unpunished for their crimes against the NHS."

'Public sector first'

He added: "I am determined to keep South East Coast Ambulance Service safe and secure for patients and staff.

"The NHS should be a safe place to work and be treated, not a place for anti-social and criminal activity."

The appointment was a first for the public sector according to Richard Hampton, head of NHS Security Management Service.

He said: "The NHS is leading the way in ensuring proper protection of people, property and assets."
