Investment of �530m into transport across the South East has been approved by the government. The South East England Regional Assembly (Seera) said improvements would be brought in from 2011 to 2016.
Councillor Nick Skellet, chairman of Seera's transport board and Surrey County Council leader, said the cash was for 16 "vital projects".
Priorities include a new rapid bus service in Brighton, Sussex, and more bus links in Ashford, Kent.
Other projects include new platforms at Reading Station in Berkshire, and improved bus services in Berkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire.
'Partnership working'
A coastal expressway bus service is set to link coastal towns in West Sussex with Brighton and Hove.
And congestion will be tackled on the A27 Chichester bypass in West Sussex.
Mr Skellett said the assembly's "partnership working" with councils and other agencies was the way to deliver the South East Plan, which has set out housing growth targets across the region, and key infrastructure.
The transport board is working with councils and the Highways Agency on finalising details of projects for Chichester, Oxford, Portsmouth and Southampton.
