Restraint death jury visit jail
Gareth Myatt
Gareth Myatt died just three days into his sentence
An inquest jury has visited a youth jail in Northamptonshire where a teenager died while being restrained by prison staff.

Gareth Myatt, 15, from Staffordshire, choked to death while being restrained by three guards at Rainsbrook training centre, near Daventry, in April 2004.

The jury visited the cell where the boy died three days into a 12-month term at the privately-run jail.

The approved restraint used by the officers has since been banned.

The 11 jurors toured the unit, accompanied by the coroner, retired district judge Richard Pollard, which is home to more than 80 youngsters.

Admissions block

They also visited the admissions block where Gareth was caught on CCTV breaking free from guards on the night of his arrival.

He was restrained twice as he arrived at the centre from his court hearing, the inquest has heard.

The teenager was held down by two male officers and a female colleague using a Home Office-approved technique called the seated double embrace.

David Tuck, Youth Justice Board monitor at the centre, has told the hearing that a number of children had complained about the method.

Mr Tuck said he raised the concerns with centre director John Parker and mentioned them in his monthly reports to the Youth Justice Board.

The inquest was adjourned until Monday.
