A new campaign to increase the take-up of free school meals and improve learning is under way in County Durham. The county council is urging parents to check up on their entitlement to free meals in a drive to get children to eat healthier dinners.
Council chiefs, who are running the campaign until 18 January 2007, believe well-fed children concentrate better.
Children are entitled to free dinners if their family's gross annual income is less that �14,155.
Councillor Claire Vasey, Cabinet member for Children's Services, said: "This take up work is important in showing our commitment to children and their families in the county.
"It's important we give children the best possible chance in life by ensuring they eat good nutritious food to assist their learning."
Children are also entitled to free dinners if their families get Income Support or Child Tax Credit.
