Engineering works and trespassers have delayed trains this week
Train operator First Great Western has apologised to passengers for its recent poor performance.

The company said "multiple reasons", both within and out of its control, caused disruption on routes through Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

They included incomplete engineering works, an object hitting a train, signalling failures and a trespasser.

Managing director Alison Forster said: "I sincerely apologise for the disruption this may have caused."

Brake problems during Tuesday's evening peak period on trains along the Reading line from London to Bristol and Cardiff to London caused "significant delays", the company said.

On Monday an object hit a London-bound train in the North Cotswolds area affecting the brakes while there were engineering works in Oxfordshire.

On Tuesday a trespasser on the line at Chippenham, Wiltshire, delayed the Bristol to London service.

Alison Forster added: "I would like to thank you for your patience during these difficult circumstances.

"I recognise that we are not giving you the level of service that we would want and therefore felt it was important to provide you with an explanation for the inconvenience you have suffered."
