Dr Marina Voikhanskaya is concerned about development plans
A former Russian dissident is to set off on a 500 mile cycle ride to highlight the threat to the countryside in the south-east and east of England.

Dr Marina Voikhanskaya, 71, will take 10 days to ride from Norwich to Luton Airport on behalf of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

She had worked as a psychiatrist in Russia before coming to England as a political refugee.

Dr Voikhanskaya, who lives in Cambs, will set off on Wednesday.

Development plans

"Having cycled round areas of Green Belt at threat from development last year I saw CPRE's work in action, and the passion that CPRE volunteers have for the countryside," she said.

"I wanted to support CPRE's work again and, living in Cambridgeshire, I was aware of the government's proposals for development in the East of England and South East."

As part of the 10 day cycle, Dr Voikhanskaya will also visit parts of Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

As well as raising awareness of the CPRE, Dr Voikhanskaya also aims to raise money for the organisation.
