Police meet over merger court bid

Four local forces would become one under the plan
The leaders of West Mercia Police are travelling to London to discuss their reasons for seeking a judicial review into a merger with other forces.

Chief constable Paul West and authority chairman Paul Deneen will meet their counterparts from three other forces involved in the proposed merger.

Staffordshire, West Mercia, West Midlands and Warwickshire would become one "super-force" under the plan.

West Mercia is the only one of the four forces to object to the merger.

It launched the High Court bid for a review on Friday saying there had been poor consultation from the Home Office and there would not be enough time to prepare for the planned merger.

The merger is part of a national plan which would reduce the number of forces from 43 to 24.

The Home Office has said larger forces are needed to tackle organised crime and terrorism.

West Mercia's court bid followed one from the North East authority Cleveland, which opposes merging with two other forces, and one from four councils in the West Midlands which are concerned about a rise in council tax.

The Home Office has said it is premature for anyone to seek a judicial review as a final decision on whether to proceed has not been taken.
