Motorcyclists head for Hastings for the May Bank Holiday each year |
Thousands of motorcyclists have descended on Hastings in a May Bank Holiday event dating back to the 1960s. The bikers took to the A21 for the annual bike run from Locksbottom, Kent, to the Sussex coast on Monday morning.
They were warned by police to take extra care this year after two people died during last year's event.
Biker Stuart White said the "nice run down to the coast" had grown in size over the years and once there everyone enjoyed looking at each other's bikes.
Seafront pub
The bike run claims to be one of the UK's largest non-organised events.
It started in the early 1960s when a small group of friends in Hastings used to ride up to Sidcup and back on the first bank holiday in May.
They would then go for a drink at the Carlisle pub on the seafront.
Since then more and more bikers have joined in, meeting at the more convenient location of Locksbottom.
The 55-mile journey has always taken them along the A21 through Kent and Sussex.
The annual event attracts up to 20,000 bikers plus thousands of spectators.
