Start date for M1 widening scheme
M1
The scheme aims to stops jams and improve safety
Work to widen a 10-mile stretch of the M1 motorway to four lanes from its M25 junction is to begin in two weeks.

The start date for the 289m scheme north and south from junctions 6A (M25) to 10 at Luton was announced by Roads Minister Stephen Ladyman on Monday.

The project, which aims to relieve congestion and improve safety, is due to be completed in December 2008.

The four-lane section will have a dedicated lane for vehicles carrying two or more people during peak hours.

It is hoped this will encourage car-sharing.

Keeping motorists updated

Dr Ladyman said more than 160,000 vehicles a day used the stretch of the motorway, making it one of the busiest in the UK.

"Widening will improve safety and reduce congestion and demonstrates the government's commitment to delivering a motorway network for the future," he said.

During the work there will be a round-the-clock 40mph speed limit seven days a week.

Once work starts there will be a dedicated area on the Highways Agency's website to keep motorists updated.
