A multi-million pound centre to help build a plastic electronics manufacturing infrastructure in the North East has been given the go ahead. Permission has been granted to plastic electronics developer Plastic Logic for the Technology Centre at NetPark technology park, Sedgefield, Co Durham.
It is intended that the centre will be an open access facility for the entire European plastic electronics community.
Safeguards will protect intellectual property and trade secrets.
The centre's development is being co-ordinated by Cenamps - a centre of excellence set up by One NorthEast to bridge the gap between universities and businesses.
World class research
The initial costs to establish the centre and instigate development projects will be more than �20m.
It is expected that leading research universities including Cambridge, Durham and Newcastle will also be important partners.
Plastic Logic chairman Lord Broers said: "The UK has produced absolutely world class research in plastic electronics.
"Now is exactly the right time to gear up for manufacturing."
