Plan for cricket academy unveiled
Top-class cricket facilities could be created if a former football ground is sold off to developers.

Darlington Football Club moved out of its Feethams ground in the town in 2003 and into its new stadium.

The owners of the Feethams site, Darlington Cricket Field Trust, are now looking at what to do with the area.

One plan is to sell the football ground site to developers and use the money to refurbish the next-door cricket ground including an indoor training centre.

Darlington Cricket club chairman Brian Johnson said: "I think we could refurbish and develop the pavilion, increase the facilities with changing rooms and shower facilities, and really make that into a first-class pavilion.

"We could improve the appearance of the ground. The present turnstile, the entrance to the ground in Feethams, is long past its sell-by date.

"We could demolish that and create a new attractive entrance to the ground."

The trust is taking specialist advice about the best way to dispose of the ground and will not take a decision until then.

Mr Johnson said: "My hope would be if we could put the ground into a really first-class state we would command the attention of the county and probably ensure first class cricket regularly featuring at Feethams."
