Children from a primary school in West Sussex are travelling to London to see their design for a garden turned into reality at the Chelsea Flower Show.

The 10 and 11-year-olds at Sheddingdean Primary, Burgess Hill, based their green, brown and white design on the shape and colours of the school logo.

Six finalists in a competition worked on the design for next week's Chelsea.

It is part of a project at the school to teach children about recycling, the environment and the school's heritage.

Old and recycled materials have been used where possible and a nature area provides habitat for birds and insects.

Getting children involved in gardening is part of a growing trend.

The Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA), which promotes organic food and farming, said that in the past five years the number of schools nationally taking part in its organic gardens for schools project has risen from 49 to 1,400.

In Kent, Sheldwich Primary near Faversham involves children as young as four in planting and tending both fruit and vegetables.

There is also a butterfly garden containing wild flowers and a learning garden with seating.

"We try to teach the children that vegetables don't come from a packet or tin," said headteacher Kathleen Barham.

"They come from the ground and children here can see them growing.

"It's not just about planting, it's about respecting the environment and healthy eating."

Secondary schools are also getting dug in.

Kent County Council said horticulture is being seen as a real career option for 14 to 16-year-olds, with vocational centres being set up where teenagers could take exams in the subject.
