Council wants bike ban cancelled
A Southern train
Southern Trains says bikes are welcome outside the rush hour
A council is writing to Southern Railway asking it to reconsider its proposal to ban bikes from trains during busy commuter periods.

The rail firm has said its rush hour services are so full of passengers there is only room for folded cycles.

But at a meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council on Thursday, councillors unanimously approved a motion against the proposal.

The city's three Labour MPs will also be asked to lobby Southern.

The council believes a ban would undermine Brighton's aim to increase the use of environmentally-friendly transport.

Southern operates trains in Sussex and Surrey, parts of Kent and services into London from those areas.

The firm's proposal would see only folding bikes allowed on trains travelling to London or Brighton between 0700-1000 and from London or Brighton between 1600-1900.

The restrictions are set to come in on 16 January.
