Retailer to close national centre
Electronics retailer Dixons is to close its national distribution centre in Stevenage and staff have been asked to consider relocating to other sites.

A new unit is to be built at Bristol and an existing centre at Newark will be expanded under new plans.

Staff could also move to satellite units at places like Thetford, Norfolk.

Dixons has told its 420 Stevenage staff it plans to shut the Pin Green national centre and Fulton Close home delivery unit in the next two years.

'Early announcement'

Financial problems are blamed for the move as the retailer restructures its product distribution system in a bid to cut costs.

A spokesman said: "We are making an early announcement as part of our policy to keep staff informed."

The hope is that as many as possible will redeploy to the two new centres and other satellite units around the country.

The spokesman said: "The plans were announced after a detailed analysis revealed a new structure would better suit our business which is delivering more than 30 million products a year."
