The house sparrow rules the roost in the North East and Cumbria |
The house sparrow is the top of the bird table in the North of England, according to local birdwatchers. Almost 14,000 people in the North East and Cumbria took part in the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch in January.
They watched gardens and local parks during one weekend and spotted more house sparrows than any other species.
The starling was relegated to second place (in Northumberland it was the blackbird, and the chaffinch in Cumbria), and blue tits came third.
David Hirst, from the RSPB's North England Region, said: "Big Garden Birdwatch allows thousands of people to get involved with a project that tells us how some of our best loved birds are faring.
"This sort of survey helps the RSPB to understand more about the population trends of UK garden birds.
"Wild birds are an excellent indicator of the health of the environment and this survey produces a valuable snapshot of winter garden bird populations."
