St Mary, Bramford, received a grant of 149,000
Historic churches across the east of England have won grants of more than 3m for restoration and repair work.

The money from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) will go to 47 churches in Beds, Bucks, Cambs, Essex, Herts, Norfolk, Northants and Suffolk.

The grants range from 9,000 for St Mary the Virgin in Little Chesterford, Essex, to 185,000 for All Saints in Great Fransham, Norfolk.

The churches are all Grade I or Grade II* listed buildings.

The churches include the church of St Nicholas at Little Wigborough near Colchester which is to receive a grant 93,000 to pay for urgent repairs to the nave.

Reverend Sam Norton, at the Church of St Nicholas, said: "The parish is very grateful for the funding provided by English Heritage enabling the restoration of our church. St Nicholas' is an historic site, surrounded by National Trust lands and property, and close to unique wildlife.

Some of the other churches winning grants:
Beds: St Nicholas, Tingrith 141,000
Cambs: St Peters, Wentworth 90,000
Herts: St Mary, Ware 43,000
Norfolk: St Mary, Aldeby 115,000
Northants: Saints' Peter and Paul, Kings Sutton 87,000
Suffolk, St Mary, Boxford 50,000
"We have been prevented from using our church because of the soil subsidence - it will be great to make good use of it again, especially the font, once it has been put back into good repair."

Other churches to benefit include:

  • St Mary the Virgin, Bramford, Suffolk - a Grade I church dating back to the 14th century built of flint rubble and knapped flint with fine gothic decorative carvings.

The 149,000 grant will fund repairs to the spire structure including its recladding and conservation of lead panels at the base of the tower.

  • The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in King's Sutton near Brackley, Northants, has a tall tower with pinnacles and flying buttresses.

Urgent repairs to the roof are already under way, but the 87,000 grant will fund the next phase of the project.

  • The 12th century All Saints Church in Little Kimble, Buckinghamshire, has been awarded a 103,000 grant to repair an unstable roof.
