Investment will be sought for existing attractions like Hadrian's Wall |
Ambitious plans to persuade millions more tourists to choose the north-east of England are being unveiled. Regional development agency One NorthEast and its partners are launching a tourism strategy.
Among its aims are an additional 1.3 million domestic visits and 700,000 international visits, as well as to increase the amount spent by tourists.
Other plans are to increase visits throughout the year and create more jobs in the tourism sector.
North East Tourism Advisory Board chairman John Sands said: "The North East tourism industry already contributes 1bn a year to the regional economy, but there is scope for it to contribute so much more and play an increasingly important role in the new, vibrant North East.
Existing attractions
"Tourism businesses from right across the region have been central to the document, with several hundred responding positively and constructively to the consultation draft document.
"This resulting strategy is backed with commitment and enthusiasm from all parties to achieve the thriving industry we all strive for and deserve."
One NorthEast is working with tourism businesses and professionals, facilities, attractions and operators to deliver the strategy.
The strategy identifies three key themes based on the region's assets - countryside and coast, history and heritage and city culture.
One of the top priorities will be to continue to attract public and private investment in existing attractions including Hadrian's Wall, Durham Castle and Cathedral, Beamish The North of England Open Air Museum, Baltic and The Sage Gateshead.
