Victoria is one of the capital's busiest commuter stations

Figures released by the British Transport Police on Tuesday show the station had more recorded violent crimes than any other commuter station.

From last April to January this year there were 198 incidents in total.

Outside the capital, there were 38 violent crimes at Reading station, 37 at Slough, 30 at Brighton and 28 at both Norwich and Eastbourne.

Termini 'busiest'

The violent crimes were defined as murder, grievous bodily harm, violent robbery or sex attacks.

Victoria had 141 incidents at its train station, and 57 at its Tube station.

Waterloo was highlighted as the second most dangerous railway station with 93 recorded incidents over the 10-month period, followed by London Bridge with 80, Liverpool Street with 68 and King's Cross with 57.

King's Cross was the second most violent Tube station with 53 recorded incidents, while Oxford Circus was third with 42.

However, a British Transport Police spokesman pointed out that the figures were relatively very low given the thousands of people who passed through the stations every day.

A spokeswoman for the Rail Passengers Council said the figures were unsurprising.

"The stations with the most crime are the main termini and they are by far the busiest," she said.
