Morrisons faces industrial action

Morrisons says a thorough review of its depots was under way
Morrisons supermarket group could be facing shelf shortages following an announcement of strike action by delivery staff.

Union members based at distribution centres in Bristol, Northwich and Wakefield voted by 918 to 289 to take the action in a row over jobs.

A Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) spokesman said the supermarket had "blocked" trade union activity.

Morrisons said they were happy to talk with the union about the ballot result.

Wednesday's announcement follows the planned closure of three distribution depots at Kent, Bristol and Cheshire, with the potential loss of up to 2,500 jobs.

'Serious shortages'

Morrisons has said that a review of its depots was under way, but the union says staff were not consulted and is now threatening strike action.

The TGWU warned that action raised the prospect of "serious shortages" on the shelves.

National officer Brian Revell accused the company of refusing to consult with unions over jobs and said Morrisons had "blocked" trade union activity.

The TGWU and the GMB union, which is also balloting its members for industrial action, will meet on Thursday to decide their next move.

In a statement, Morrisons said: "We have 12 other distribution sites operated by third parties and/or represented by other trade unions, not involved in these ballots.

"We have spoken with Brian Revell, a National Officer of the TGWU, and indicated that we are happy to discuss the ballot result. We will offer similar discussions to Jude Brimble, a National Officer of the GMB, once the outcome of their ballot is known."

The depots involved, in Kent, Bristol and Cheshire, were formerly owned by Safeway which Morrisons bought in 2003.
