East Coast operator GNER is planning to run additional services from stations in Yorkshire and County Durham to Newcastle on 18 September.

About 50,000 people are expected to take part in the 25th running of the famous North East half-marathon from Newcastle to South Shields.

The event is expected to raise about �10m for a string of good causes.

Colourful characters

GNER spokesman Alan Hyde said: "The Great North Run is an established highlight in the sporting calendar, and as well as attracting world-class athletes, it also annually raises many thousands of pounds for a host of charities.

"We're keen to support the event by operating extra early morning trains into Newcastle on the morning of the race."

Three additional GNER services will be running northwards from York to Newcastle on 18 September, leaving York at 0645 BST, 0651 BST and 0657 BST.

They will all call at Northallerton, Darlington and Durham stations.

This year's run boasts a huge collection of colourful characters, ranging from glamour model Nell McAndrew to former boxer Frank Bruno.
