Market set to ban replica weapons
Replica weapon
Replica weapons will be banned from sale, under the rules
Replica guns, ornamental weapons and fireworks could soon be banned from Darlington's outdoor market.

A new set of market regulations have been drawn up and councillors will be recommended to approve them next week.

They will also cover a ban on anything that the market officer considers to be a risk to people visiting the market.

Traders will also be banned from encouraging people to congregate around their stalls, causing an obstruction or using loud music to attract shoppers.

The move comes just weeks after the mother of a Middlesbrough man, killed with a samurai sword, vowed to get bladed weapons banned in the UK.

Mother's campaign

Robert Dunne, 31, was murdered in January 2003.

Jason Kelly, who was 19, was jailed for life after pleading guilty to murdering Mr Dunne with the 12-inch blade he kept at his home in Middlesbrough.

Barbara Dunne has launched a nationwide campaign to have combat blades banned and urged anyone who owns an assault knife or samurai sword to hand them in.

Stephen Harker, cabinet member for Consumer and Environmental Services said: "We will be looking at these new regulations which give the council the control to make the market a safer place for traders and members of the public."
