Centre charts rail line's history
Weardale train
The campaign to reopen the line started in 1992
A new education centre will tell the history of a stretch of railway line where steam trains have recently started running again.

In July, a five-mile line from Stanhope to Wolsingham was opened after a campaign started in 1992 to reopen the Weardale Railway, in County Durham.

An education centre was being opened at Stanhope station on Saturday.

Displays will describe how the railway first came to Weardale, its development, decline and rebirth.

The centre was being opened by Richard Taylor, who was British Rail's general manager at Newcastle Central Station and president of the Friends of the Heritage Line.

A derelict waiting shelter has been refurbished for the education centre.

Mr Taylor was also unveiling two plaques to acknowledge the work of four members of the Weardale branch of the Friends of the Heritage Line - Gil Chatfield, John Woods, Steve Richmond and Gordon Routh.

It is hoped the centre will be a visitor attraction and will also be used by local schools and groups interested in the history of Weardale.
